Tresfjord, Romsdal

This picture was taken in Tresfjord, Romsdal, shortly after the turn of the century. It was made into a postcard and this card was send from my Great Grandmother Karoline Eidhammer at Vestnes to her father Markus Olsen Moldenæs to wish him happy birthday in 1907. The picture is in good shape except from the fact that a stamp collector have removed the upper left corner.

We view Tresfjord from the Eidhammer farm looking south in the fjord. Along the shore in the middle of the picture is the Inner Eidhammer farms. This is where my family name origin. The Eidhammer farms stretch to the south towards the river Tressa. Eidhammer is followed by the Sør-Sylte farms situated on both sides of the river. To the left in the picture we see the Kyrkje-Sylte farms. These farms have got the name from the Church (Norw: Kyrkje/Kirke) and looking closely we can see the church close to the edge of the picture. The first church at this location was moved there in 1589. As the population grew there was soon need for a bigger church that was built in 1660. In 1816 the population once again had grown so much that a new church was needed. In 1825 the construction of the present day church began. It is wooden, built in an octagon shape. Inside it has beautiful paintings.

The mountains we see in the background are from right: Kvitnykja, Lauparen (to the back), Rongja (in front) and Nonsfjellet.
